MANGALDAI: During the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU)-sponsored movement for a separate Bodoland, a villager named Deben Boro of Bogoribari near Khairabari in Udalguri district was brutally shot dead in police firing on March 3, 1989. Swahid Deben Boro is the first martyr in the greater Khairabari area.
A total of 47 martyrs offered supreme sacrifice during this movement in Khairabari area. With a view to keep the memory and sacrifice of these 47 swahids alive, former ABSU leader and Executive Member of BTC for Archaeology, Museum and PHED, Lwmshrw Daimary, with active cooperation of Kalaigaon MLA Maheswar Boro and the people of Khairabari, has taken up a novel project for construction of a state-of-the-art Mungkhlong Garden (Swahid Udyan) at the approximate cost of Rs 3 crore.
Meanwhile, the Revenue Department of the BTC has allotted a plot of land measuring 10 bighas near the Khairabari Block Development Office. The construction of the well-decorated memorial has already been completed at the approximate cost of Rs. 70 lakh. The development of land and infrastructure has been going on under the personal supervision of Executive Member Daimary and legislator Boro. A few days back, Executive Member of BTC for Transport, Cooperation and Soil Conservation, Jagadish Sarkar extended his helping hand with the assurance to sanction an amount of Rs 20 lakh for the Swahid Udyan. The Swahid Udyan is likely to be dedicated to the people next year.
