TANGLA: In yet another sensational and horrific incident of daylight murder, a 19-year-old college youth was allegedly brutally murdered by a group of miscreants while he along with his friends went to celebrate the end of their session examination near a river bank at Paschim Nalbari on the outskirts of Tangla town in Udalguri district on Tuesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Mrisanka Basumatary, a resident of Babupara locality in Ward No. 3 of Tangla town. The mother of the victim, Sunita Das Basumatary said, “Our younger son called me, crying to save his life from a group of unidentified unruly youths who had attacked him with bamboo poles after a verbal altercation with them. By the time my husband and I reached, he was severely injured. We took him to the Tangla CHC where he was provided with first aid and referred to Mangaldai Civil Hospital. However, the pulse rate dropped and he succumbed to injuries on the way to Mangaldai.”
Sources in the hospital stated that the youth died of a brain hemorrhage caused due to the fatal injury. “The Tangla CHC even lacks basic amenities like oxygen cylinder and ambulance service owing to which my brother had to be taken in a private car,” alleged the elder brother of the victim, Mrinmoy Basumatari, a fifth-semester aeronautical engineering student.
According to witnesses, the youth was brutally assaulted by a group of miscreants comprising no less than seven to eight persons. The friends of the victim also sustained minor injuries. Meanwhile, based on an FIR lodged by the victim’s mother, two friends of the victim, Shiva Boro (18) and Dipankar Dey (19) have been detained at Tangla police station for interrogation. Talking to The Sentinel, Superintendent of Police of Udalguri, Rajveer Singh said, “The two groups fought over trivial matters which resulted in the death of the victim. We have already identified five persons alleged to be involved in the incident and they will be nabbed soon.” “We have registered a murder case against the group of miscreants vide Tangla PS case no 146/18 under IPC 302 (Punishment for murder) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention),” said the officer-in-charge of Tangla Police Station, Durga Kingkar Sarma, adding that the friends were being interrogated and efforts were on to nab the culprits involved. The police have also recovered the bamboo pole and other incriminating materials from the spot of the incident. Meanwhile, the father of the victim, Nabin Basumatari alleged that their son was a victim of cold-blooded murder. The Tangla unit of All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and Bhergaon District Block Bodo People’s Front (BPF) have demanded immediate arrest and stringent punishment to the culprits.
