Katigorah: A sense of shock and suspicion has gripped Sonagiri village in Katigorah, Cachar district, following the alleged suicide of a newlywed youth just four days after his marriage.
The deceased was found hanging at his maternal uncle’s residence in Cheragi Bazar early Saturday morning. He had married a widow through a court registry in Silchar and had chosen to stay at his uncle’s home rather than visit his parental house, reportedly due to controversy and familial disapproval surrounding his decision to marry a widow.
“This morning I woke up and found him dead. I don’t know what went wrong,” said his maternal uncle, visibly shaken while speaking to the media.
Police from the local station rushed to the scene and sent the body to Silchar Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding his death.
What has further deepened the mystery is that the woman’s previous husband had also reportedly died by suicide, leading to rampant speculation in the locality. Locals are questioning whether there could be a pattern or deeper issues at play, given the recurrence of such a tragic incident.
So far, no formal complaint or FIR has been filed by either family. Police have stated that they will proceed based on the post-mortem report and any new evidence that emerges. The incident has left the local community rattled, with many demanding a thorough and transparent probe into what they believe could be more than just a case of suicide.
