Nagaon: The Nagaon Municipality on Thursday carried out a sudden eviction drive across several commercial areas of the town. The operation targeted unauthorized vendors and traders occupying public footpaths, drawing mixed reactions from locals.

Municipal officials said that the crackdown was prompted by repeated complaints from civic groups, senior citizens, and concerned residents about severe congestion caused by illegal roadside stalls. Despite multiple warnings and prior notices, many traders continued to encroach on public walkways. The unannounced operation, led by municipal staff and backed by enforcement personnel, saw the dismantling of temporary stalls and the clearing of sidewalks in key market zones, which had long been choked by unregulated vending activities.

“These vendors were continuously violating public space rules, putting pedestrians, especially the elderly and schoolchildren, at risk,” said a senior municipal official. “Today’s drive is part of a broader campaign to reclaim public spaces and restore order in the town’s busy areas.”

Civic organizations have also lauded the initiative, calling it a necessary step toward urban discipline and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. The municipality has warned that further action will be taken if illegal encroachments reappear. All traders and vendors have been urged to cooperate with the administration and refrain from occupying footpaths in the future.
