Namtola Police arrested Adivasi student leader in land encroachment case

SIVASAGAR: An Adivasi student leader was sent to jail on Wednesday for allegedly evicting people and encroaching land in various parts of the Assam-Nagaland border near Sonari in the district of Charaideo.

According to reports, the Namtola Police arrested Lakhan Gowala, vice-president of Adivasi Students' Union, Charaideo District Committee, from his residence on Tuesday night, based on a complaint by Harish Tiwari of Ward No. 5, Namtola Tea Garden under Towkak Gaon Panchayat in Charaideo district for allegedly threatening him and encroaching his 2 bigha 1 kotha and 1 lessa land under Patta No.83 and Dag No. 193.

The police filed a case No. 42/21 in connection with the incident and sent the student leader to jail on Wednesday under Section 406/420/468/447/506 of the Indian Penal Code. On the other hand, after sending the student leader to jail, a large group of the organization arrived at the residence of Tiwari and threatened him to withdraw the complaint.

The so-called student leader has been accused of committing various criminal acts, including extortion and land grabbing by intimidation, from various quarters in the past. Meanwhile, the victims as well as the people of the area have expressed satisfaction over the stern action taken by the police against such student leaders.
