Kokrajhar: The North East Minority Students Union (NEMSU) and its BTR Committee, along with help from nearby districts, held a two hour strike in Kokrajhar on Friday. The protest was against the removal of people from land in different parts of Assam by the government.
Meanwhile, the students said the government is removing poor and minority people from their homes by calling them “Bangladeshi’s” or “Enroachers”(illegal settlers). They believe this people have been living on the land for many years and are being treated unfairly. NEMSU strongly blamed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma , saying the government is targeting minorities in the name of development. They asked the government is targeting minorities in the name of development.
Furthermore, they asked the government to stop the evictions and to check documents properly before taking such action. Many families are scared and worried after losing their homes. The strike was peaceful. The students held signs and shouted slogans.
NEMSU said they will hold bigger protests if the government does not listen to their demands and take adequate steps.
