DIBRUGARH: Nokhyotro, a volunteer-driven non-profit based in Kumaronichiga, Dibrugarh, was founded on December 23, 2024, by a group of committed young individuals—Abhijit Chakraborty, Bikash Chakraborty, Manab Chakraborty, and Jyotiprakash Chakraborty (late).

On the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, the NGO Nokhyotro – A Journey of Life organized a distinctive awareness program titled “Ujjibon – A Journey towards Awareness” at the premises of Barbaruah Tea Garden Primary School.

The event was coordinated under the guidance of Manab Chakraborty and Samiran Bhattacharya, with support from Bikash Chakraborty, Abhijit Chakraborty and Anshuman Chakraborty. The day began with the hoisting of the national flag by the Headmistress of the school, Pramila Manki, followed by the National Anthem and a brief address by her.

Tea garden manager Sameer Lodhi also graced the occasion, highlighting the significance of such awareness initiatives for the upliftment of tea garden communities and the role NGOs can play in bringing about positive change. During the program, five senior workers from the garden were felicitated for their contributions. President of NGO, Bikash Chakraborty outlined the formation, vision and objectives of Nokhyotro, emphasizing its mission to support education, health and socio-economic development.

Special guests included Dr. Barun Dey (Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Dibrugarh University), Dr. Minakshi Puzari (Assistant Professor, Department of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University) and Dr. Munmi Bora (Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Dibrugarh University). They were felicitated with traditional Assamese gamosas and saplings.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Barun Dey spoke on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, cleanliness, savings and the need to reduce addiction for building a bright future for children. Dr. Minakshi Puzari stressed the value of education, opportunities for higher studies, government scholarship schemes, skill development and small-scale entrepreneurship as means of improving livelihoods.

She also discussed preventive healthcare measures. Dr. Munmi Bora urged parents to encourage their children to focus on education rather than solely engaging in tea garden labour, noting that such efforts could pave the way for an improved future for the entire community.

The programme concluded with the national anthem, as participants expressed their appreciation for the event and its positive impact. Residents from five tea estates in Barbaruah area attended the celebrations, and Nokhyotro’s unique initiative was widely lauded by the community.
