SILCHAR: The Northeast Frontier Railway achieved a significant milestone as the first goods train with Electric Loco departed from Badarpur Railway Station at 7:30 pm yesterday and began its journey towards Jirania.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has also made significant progress in improving electric traction by successfully testing electric locomotives on two newly electrified sections.

On January 29, trials were held between Agartala and Sabroom (112.91 RKM) in the Lumding Division, and between New Cooch Behar and Bamanhat (49.81 RKM) in the Alipurduar Division on January 30 and 31. These tests, conducted at the highest possible speeds, mark a crucial step towards faster, more efficient, and eco-friendly railway operations.

In alignment with Indian Railways' plan for a zero-carbon rail network, NFR is moving forward with full electrification. By December 2024, about 2,828 Route Kilometers (RKM) had been electrified, achieving nearly 70% of its electrification target.

Following these successful trials, electric train operations are expected to commence in the coming months, enhancing connectivity and efficiency in the Northeast region.

This electrification initiative will significantly reduce carbon emissions, lower fossil fuel dependence, and reduce operational costs, contributing to sustainable railway development. NFR's efforts are a step towards creating a modern and environmentally friendly railway network.

Meanwhile, India and Japan are preparing to launch the Shinkansen E10 bullet train by 2029-30. The E10, capable of reaching speeds up to 400 km/h, will operate on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, drastically reducing travel time to just over two hours.
