PRAYAGRAJ: For the first time in Mahakumbh history, a dedicated camp for the Northeast has been established, drawing a large number of devotees from the region. More than 20 saints and spiritual practitioners from remote areas of the Northeast will join the akharas to participate in the ‘Amrit Snan’ on ‘Mauni Amavasya’ this Wednesday.
At the “Pragjyotish Kshetra” camp in Sector 7, Mahant Keshav Das Ji Maharaj, Mahamandaleshwar of the Nirvani Ani Akhara, told the media, “On Mauni Amavasya, 22 saints from the Northeast will join the akharas for the Amrit Snan, with most participating for the first time.”
He noted that the Northeast camp has attracted thousands from the region to Prayagraj, generating widespread enthusiasm. Esteemed seers from the Northeast, including Padma Shri awardee Chitt Maharaj and Prabhu Pitambar Dev Goswami, are also part of this unique initiative.
Mahant Keshav Das Ji further mentioned that the Northeast is famous for the Maa Kamakhya temple. For the first time, a replica of the Maa Kamakhya temple has been set up at the Kumbh. He mentioned that devotees are receiving sacred water, a mix of Kamakhya and Ganga waters, at the camp.
The camp also showcases the ancient Vaishnav tradition of the Northeast, centered around the “Namghar” system introduced by Srimanta Sankardev. It hosts an uninterrupted reading of the Bhagavad Gita composed by Srimanta Sankardev and follows traditional rituals such as lighting lamps and performing kirtans.
Speaking about the camp, Mahant Keshav Das Ji said, “The British referred to the region as the Northeast, but its ancient name is Pragjyotishpur. Therefore, this camp is named Pragjyotish Kshetra.”
The camp will also feature cultural performances, including the bamboo dance, apsara dance, and Ram Vijay Bhaona. He added, “These cultural elements are being presented at the Maha Kumbh for the first time.”
