One sentenced to 7 years rigorous imprisonment

DHUBRI: Dhubri Sessions Judge, in connection with sessions case No.11/2019, sentenced accused Dhananjoy Ray to 7 years rigorous imprisonment on Friday.

Dhananjay Ray alias Dhano Ray, a resident of village Debottar Hasdaha Part-II, was guilty for an offence punishable under section 457 and 326 of Indian Penal Code. The accused Dhananjoy Ray used to talk and send messages to one Binota Ray, wife of Ramesh Ray, for which he was restrained and prohibited to come to the house of Ramesh Ray.

One day, enraged with such prohibition, the accused Dhananjoy Ray, armed with a dagger, entered the house of Ramesh Ray at 3 am on December 6, 2017 and stabbed Ramesh

Ray, his wife Binota Ray and son Jitu Ray, causing them serious injuries. The earning members of the family were made handicapped by the accused which give rise to this sessions case arising out of Dhubri Police Station Case No.1437/2017. The case was taken up by the Sessions Judge, Dhubri and after having completed the full trial, Sessions Judge

Thaneswar Kalita delivered the judgment by sentencing the accused Dhananjoy Ray to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 7 years and to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 under section 326 of IPC, in

default of payment of fine, he has to again undergo rigorous imprisonment for one more year.

The Sessions Judge also sentenced the accused under section 457 of IPC to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 5 (five) years and to pay a fine of Rs.25,000, in default of payment of fine, he has to go rigorous imprisonment for one more year.

The case was conducted by Additional Public Prosecutor Mirza Khan and it was defended by advocates NI Choudhury and Mofidul Islam. The court delivered the judgment in a virtual manner while following COVID protocol.

The court further directed the District Legal Services Authority, Dhubri to assess adequate compensation to the injured persons under section 357(A) of Cr.P.C.
