Over 100 kg ganja seized; driver shot at

The drugs was loaded at Kharupetia, Mangaldoi and supposed to be delivered in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Kokrajhar: In a continuing operation against drugs smugglers, the police of Srirampur recovered over 100 kg of ganja from a truck heading to UP and the driver of the truck was shot at when he tried to snatch the service pistol and fire at the police.

Police sources said acting on reliable information on Thursday at about 6 pm at Srirampur, one vehicle no-HR/ 38 U -1778 was intercepted on checking, it was found that 10 packets of ganja weighing about 105 kg were kept concealed between the other goods (brooms). The drugs was loaded at Kharupetia, Mangaldoi and supposed to be delivered in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The driver Aarif Khan, son of Fajruddin of Bijapur, Faridabad, Haryana was apprehended.

Sources said that during interrogation, the accused revealed that there were other persons involved with him who were from the Gossaigaon area. In order to nab these persons, the police took the accused with them in the search operation. When the police team reached the outskirts of Dologaon, he suddenly snatched the service pistol of I/C of Srirampur and cocked the pistol to fire at the police party. Sensing immediate danger to the police party, the other officer immediately fired upon the accused. The bullet hit his left leg near the calf and he was immediately recaptured and sent to RN Brahma Civil Hospital for treatment.

In the meantime, some miscreants set the truck on fire for hampering and tampering the evidence.
