DHUBRI: Over 110 makeshift shops dotted along the bank of river Brahmaputra in Ward No. 3 were dismantled and evicted till Tuesday.

20 makeshift shops opposite Dhubri District Treasury Office and near the Rajiv Gandhi Children’s Amusement Park, 40 shops erected on the side of Netai Dhubuni Park, and 50 shops located on Jogomaya Ghat were dismantled and evicted.

The action was initiated after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to Dhubri last week, who not only issued shoot-at-sight orders but also instructed to carry out eviction drives against land encroachers and illegal occupiers of land wherever sighted.

When contacted by The Sentinel, Dhubri Circle Officer Partha Pratim Barman said that the eviction would continue elsewhere in the town area and other places.

A major eviction drive is ongoing in Hasila Wetlands in Goalpara district wherein over 700 families have been evicted till now. An official said that Hasila Beel, having an area of more than 1,500 bighas of land, had nearly 700 families occupying a substantial portion with five LP schools.

Many evicted families claimed to have been living there for a long time and have names in the NRC while few accepted having stayed illegally for years.

A section of the evicted families demanded rehabilitation packages, but a source in Goalpara administration informed that there was no plan to provide any compensation or rehabilitate the families evicted.

Source also said that all the families, illegally occupying the land, were served notices thrice to vacate the land, and non-compliance of the notices compelled the Goalpara District Administration to bulldoze the illegal establishments therein and this was done in accordance with the law of the land.
