ORANG: The political scenario in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is witnessing significant turbulence ahead of the BTC elections, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensifies its campaign with aggressive momentum. In a major political shift, more than 500 members, including several key leaders from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), joined the BJP during a grand joining ceremony held on July 22 at the Model Library Auditorium in Rowta, Udalguri district.
Among the prominent leaders who embraced the BJP were Gajen Hynari, former Central Executive Member of UPPL, Tuneswar Basumatary, President of VCDC, and Ghanshyam Mahanta, Vice-President of Rowta UPPL Block Committee. Their defection marked a serious blow to the UPPL’s strength in the Rowta constituency.
The joining programme was organized under the leadership of the Rowta BJP Mandal and witnessed the presence of several high-profile BJP leaders, including Pallab Lochan Das, BJP’s National General Secretary and former MP, who is currently the observer for Udalguri district. Also in attendance were BJP spokesperson Pranabjyoti Lahkar and Sunil Basumatary, President of Udalguri district BJP.
Addressing the gathering, Pallab Lochan Das remarked, “The people of BTR are eagerly yearning for the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party. This wave of support reflects a desire for development and change.” He further emphasized BJP’s commitment to liberating the Rowta constituency from UPPL’s control.
The event was supported by a strong organizational team, including Dipak Mour, MCLA from Pachim Serfang constituency, Ajay Kumar Hazarika, General Secretary of Udalguri district BJP, Robin Daimary, President of Rowta Mandal BJP, general secretaries Chamala Daimary and Raju Hazarika, and Samar Hazarika, district President of BJP Yuva Morcha, among others.
This large-scale induction into the BJP signalled a reshaping of political loyalties in BTR, and may significantly alter the dynamics of the upcoming BTC elections.
