HAFLONG: With the theme of the session, “Violence Against Women and Menstrual Hygiene,” Gandhi followers Rupak Das and Soumya Mukherjee and Karuna Fellows Jesie Nampui and Birta Engtipi, along with Programme Leader Jintamani Sarania from the Piramal Foundation, visited the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and organized the session at New Sangbar, some 90 km from Haflong on Wednesday.
The Gandhi followers and programme leader discussed with the students the importance of the topic of violence against women and girls, including physical violence, economic violence, and sexual harassment. They also discussed good touch and bad touch and played games with the students.
Then, Karuna Fellows dwelt at length on menstrual hygiene with the students. They discussed what necessary actions should be taken to ensure menstrual hygiene and why it is important.
This was followed by a rally against violence against women and girls wherein more than 70 students and teachers, including the superintendent of the school, attended and took part in the rally.
This initiative is a part of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an international movement that runs from November 25 to December 10. They also took a pledge against gender-based violence.
