GAURISAGAR: The two-day long platinum jubilee of Gaurisagar Sericulture Government Farm was held recently on the bank of the historic Gaurisagar tank.
The farm was established in 1941. The first day's programme started with hoisting of flag by Kandarpa Sarma, president of the reception committee. At the same time, 75 flags were hoisted by various distinguished persons on the occasion of the diamond jubilee. Thereafter, the swahid tarpan, lighting of lamp and plantation sapling programme were held. Later, Mohendra Konwer, Assistant Director of Sericulture, inaugurated the door of the exhibition. An educational programme on prospect of sericulture in Assam was held on this occasion. Kamal Gogoi, Inspector of Schools, Sivasagar division, inaugurated it.
In the programme, Dr.Manjit Gogoi, Principal of Jhanji HNS College, was the speaker and he emphasized the prospect of Muga cultivation in Assam and its importance and significance in today's context.
On the concluding day, in the morning session a get-together was held under the chairmanship of Baneswar Nath, former Director of Sericulture. Thereafter, an open session was held under the chairmanship of Kandarpa Sarma, president of the reception committee. In the meeting, Ukhao Gwra Brahma, Minister for Sericulture, Handloom and Textile, Soil Conservation, Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes, was the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Brahma highlighted some beneficial schemes of the department and assured publicly the enhancement of Gaurisagar Government Sericulture Farm. In the meeting, a souvenir titled Chandraki published on this occasion and edited by Munin Borah was unveiled by Dr Jogesh Deori. Three progressive farmers, namely Kiron Phukan (muga), Mridul Kumar Gogoi (eri) and Podmeswar Kagayung (pat) were warmly felicitated.
Earlier in the meeting, the reception committee submitted a memorandum to minister Ukhao Gwra Brahma briefing about the six-point charter of demands for enhancement of Gaurisagar Sericulture Farm. The programme ended with a cultural night. Mrinanka Saikia, social worker and cultural activist, inaugurated it. Artistes Rupom Borah, Brishti Rani Saikia, Barbi Borah and others performed songs.
