Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on Swahid Diwas on Tuesday to honor the martyrs of the Assam Movement, praising their "extraordinary courage and sacrifices."
He said the efforts of those who fought in the movement to protect Assam’s unique culture and identity continue to inspire the state’s progress stating, "Swahid Diwas is an occasion to remember the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of those who dedicated themselves to the Assam Movement. Their unwavering resolve and selfless efforts helped preserve Assam's unique culture and identity. Their valour also inspires us all to continue working towards a developed Assam."
The Assam Movement was a protest against the rise in illegal Bangladeshi migration, which changed the state’s demographic landscape. Modi’s statement highlights the BJP’s effort to connect with the movement’s legacy. It was first led by the All Assam Students' Union and All-Assam Gana Sangram Parishad and later supported by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which is now part of the NDA. By reminding people of the movement, the BJP tries to link Assamese identity with its development plans, keeping a strong foothold in political vision.
The movement led to the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985, but it remains a controversial issue. The AGP was formed resulting from this movement, gained political power initially but lost support over time due to governance issues and unfulfilled promises.
Over the years, the BJP has become the dominant political party in Assam, positioning itself as the defender of Assamese identity. By focusing on cultural politics, the Citizenship Amendment Act, and building broad alliances, the BJP has expanded its influence among various communities.
Modi’s focus on infrastructure and economic growth has further strengthened the party’s popularity. Meanwhile, Congress, once powerful in Assam, was seen as uninterested in addressing migration concerns during the movement, which led to its decline in the state.
