Lakhimpur: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed by the authorities in the Lakhimpur district so as to ensure that "public peace and tranquillity" is maintained.

Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in the Lakhimpur district of Assam to keep the law and order situation under control.

This move comes in the wake of the recent violence that has flared up across the country following the derogatory remarks made against the Prophet Mohammad by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

There is a fear that anti-social elements might jeopardize public life and property in the Lakhimpur district of Assam and the situation could get out of control, thereby causing unrest.

Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur district, Sumit Sattawan, issued the order imposing section 144 CrPC in order to prevent any kind of turmoil from taking place.

The Lakhimpur district administration has strictly prohibited the gathering of five or more persons in any public place for any reason whatsoever including NH-15 of Lakhimpur district without prior approval from the district magistrate and additional district magistrate.

As per the order, lethal weapons and arms including batons, daggers, sticks, spears, swords, bows and arrows etc are strictly forbidden in public places.

Rallies, meetings, gatherings and public events will not be allowed to take place following the imposition of section 144 CrPC in the Lakhimpur district.

Earlier, Section 144 CrPC was imposed in five districts of Assam - Kamrup, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Golaghat and the preventive measures were taken for the same reason.
