LAKHIMPUR: Massive protest programmes opposing the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) continue in Lakhimpur. Demanding the closure of the contentious big river dam, set up by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji-Arunachal border area, the activists of All Assam Chutia Students’ Union burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday in North Lakhimpur town in front of the Lakhimpur Zila Parishad office. The protesters rocked the environment shouting various slogans against the Chief Minister, BJP-led Union and State governments, NHPC and SLHP.

The leaders of the organization vehemently condemned the State Government and NHPC’s move of inking the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) recently by allegedly indulging in ‘secret confederation’ between them in a closed room towards a resumption of the construction work of the project.

“Establishment of big river dam in a high seismic zone, without following the report of expert committee and ignoring the greater interest of the downstream people, can never be approved of. We will not allow construction of the project unless and until the security of the life, properties and the civilization of the downstream people are ensured. BJP had opposed big river dam and staged protest programme against SLHP before the political party gained power. It is shameful that the same political party has stood in favour of the controversial project now. It is unfortunate that the ‘Jatiya Nayak’ is just busy in saving his chair at present,” said Raju Chutia, the central committee vice-president of the organization.
