UMRANGSO: Rescue teams are working hard at the coal mine site in Umrangso where eight workers remain trapped following an accident on January 6. The teams comprise personnel from the Indian Army, Navy, NDRF, and other agencies who face big challenges because the water levels keep rising at the site.
Heavy pumps have been used to pump out water and sonar equipment has been used, but this has not helped lower the water level, which complicates the rescue process.
Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, Team Commander of NDRF said that the water is still entering the mine, which is preventing progress. "We have conducted searches in the vertical area, but no significant findings have been made. Our primary focus is on removing the water," Singh stated, highlighting the difficulties in continuing with manual searches.
Earlier, HPS Kandari, Commandant of the 1st Battalion of the NDRF, confirmed that two pumps are actively working to drain the water, and this process will continue overnight. Once the water levels are reduced, the teams will proceed with manual searches to locate the trapped miners.
One body has been found at the scene thus far, and recovery efforts are ongoing to find the other trapped miners. The rescue effort is still going on, and officials are hopeful that by draining the water, more progress will be possible in the days ahead.
