DIBRUGARH: Anger erupted at Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh as hundreds of fourth-grade contractual workers staged a protest demanding an immediate hike in wages and timely payment of their salaries.

The protesting workers alleged that 235 contractual employees, including security guards, sweepers, ward boys, and other support staff, are being paid a daily wage of just Rs 266. At 30 days, this amounts to only Rs 7,980 a month, they said.

The workers alleged that despite performing essential duties within one of Assam’s premier medical institutions, they continue to face financial hardship because of what they described as meagre wages and irregular salary payments.

Raising slogans and voicing their grievances, the employees demanded that the authorities and contractors address the issue without further delay. They sought a substantial wage revision, regular and timely payment of salaries, and other basic facilities and benefits.

The protesters said that their responsibilities are crucial to the day-to-day functioning of the hospital, with security personnel, sanitation workers, and ward boys working on the frontline to keep hospital services running.
