MANGALDAI: Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua, crowned as the King of Humour (Rasaraj), married into the renowned Thakur family of Jorasanko in Kolkata. However, he never allowed his Assamese identity to be overshadowed or influenced by the heritage of the Thakur family. Instead, he made immense contributions to enriching Assamese literature and language, reflecting his deep commitment to preserving and promoting Assamese heritage. His significant literary contributions earned him the title of Sahityarathi, said senior journalist Bhargab Kumar Das while addressing the Xahitya Divas event, organized to commemorate his death anniversary at Mangaldai on March 26.

The function was organized by the Darrang Zila Sahitya Sabha (DZSS), a district committee of Axom Xahitya Xabha, in association with Mangaldai Xahitya Xabha, in the conference hall of DZSS.

“More significantly, in his time, when a section of elite Assamese intellectuals—Indian in blood and colour but English in taste, opinions, morals, and intellect—urged the British government to impose a ban on Bihu, labeling it as an obscene and vulgar festival, Lakshminath Bezbarua strongly opposed this through his writings. His legacy continues to inspire generations,” added Bhargab Kumar Das in his speech as the chief guest of the function.

The event, presided over by former DZSS vice president Dhirendra Kumar Sarma, featured floral tributes to Sahityarathi by eminent litterateur and former DZSS president Dr. Amarendra Narayan Dev, a scion of the Koch royal dynasty of Darrang. Dr. Dev also spoke on Bezbarua’s life, works, and immense contributions to Assamese literature. Poet and writer Malay Barua delivered an analytical speech on the self-composed poems recited by several poets.

Former DZSS Presidents Prithu Ram Barua and Dr. Sahir Bhuyan, AASU Vice President Khanindra Rajbongshi, octogenarian poet Pramod Saha, and Axom Xahitya Xabha Executive Member Mukut Hazarika also attended the function. Earlier, DZSS Secretary Mrinal Rajbongshi extended a warm welcome to the guests and the audience.
