Seven arrested for gambling in Dibrugarh

The Dibrugarh Police on Thursday arrested former MLA from Naharkatia Naren Sonowal for allegedly being involved in illegal gambling activities.

DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Police on Thursday arrested former MLA from Naharkatia Naren Sonowal for allegedly being involved in illegal gambling activities from Boiragimoth area in Dibrugarh. Six more persons were also arrested along with Naren Sonowal. The other accused have been identified as Mukul Ghosh, Mehroz Ahmed, Dipendra Dutta, Ritwik Baruah, Abdul Rashid and Dipak Ranjan.

Talking to media persons on Friday, Dibrugarh police station officer in charge Raju Bahadur Chetry said, “After getting specific information, we have raised a house at the Boiragimoth and arrested seven persons who were found indulging in illegal gambling activities.”

“We have recovered a huge number of materials used for gambling besides Rs 96,500 in cash. We have also seized a car, and two motorcycles used by the accused. We have registered a case 150/2023 at the Dibrugarh police station,” he said. He said, “All of them were forwarded to court.” Naren Sonowal was a former AGP MLA from Naharkatia.
