SIVASAGAR: In line with the directives of the National AIDS Control Society, a 60-day HIV/AIDS awareness campaign commenced in Sivasagar on Wednesday. The programme began with an awareness rally that started from Sivasagar Civil Hospital, Joysagar, inaugurated by Joint Director of Health Services, Dr Makhan Kalita.
Following the rally, a meeting was held at the Girin Gogoi Memorial Auditorium within the hospital premises, chaired by Dr Makhan Kalita. Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Assistant Commissioner (Health), Sivasagar, Parishmita Dehingia, expressed deep concern over the rising number of HIV cases in the district. She informed that awareness activities will be conducted in 120 locations across the district over the next two months.
Principal of the hospital, Dr Sadhan Bora, highlighted that the increase in HIV cases was largely linked to the growing number of drug users in the region. Noted physician Dr Rupam Borkakoty stressed that prevention is possible only through sustained awareness. District AIDS Control Officer Dr Dwijen Koch and Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) Officer Nava Talukdar also addressed the meeting, urging collective efforts to curb the spread of the disease.
