NAZIRA: A piggery farm established at the Khelua Veterinary Hospital in ShivSagar has turned out to be a monumental failure, with nothing but empty concrete sheds remaining after a massive investment of over Rs 1 crore. It has become a symbol of government apathy and inefficiency. Despite being built at a cost of Rs 1.63 crore in 2016-17, the farm has failed to achieve its objectives and has been left abandoned.
The farm was inaugurated by the then Sivasagar MLA Pranab Gogoi on April 9, 2015, with high hopes of providing a source of income for unemployed youth and supporting the local community. However, despite receiving 12 piglets under the National Livestock Mission and 50 piglets under the National Agriculture Development Scheme, the farm’s livestock died due to lack of food, medicines, and vaccines. The farm’s current state is a stark reminder of the need for accountability and transparency in public spending. This incident has raised questions about the role of the district animal husbandry department and the veterinary hospital in managing the project.
Despite the government’s investment of crores of rupees, the farm has failed to produce any tangible results. The farm’s infrastructure, including concrete sheds, lies idle, and there is no sign of any constructive step or plan to revive the project. This crore-rupee pig breeding farm of Sivasagar has turned into a white elephant.
The issue has sparked concerns among the local community, who had hoped to benefit from the farm. The farm’s failure has also highlighted the lack of initiative and vision among government officials, who have failed to take corrective action despite being aware of the project’s shortcomings. As the government plans to run a pork processing center at Nazira at a cost of Rs 114.4 crore, the destruction of the pig breeding farm on the premises of Khelua Veterinary Hospital raises questions about the effectiveness of government initiatives.
