Tezpur: “Is India reeling under economic crisis? A question everyone is asking but getting contrary answers. If you ask me, I will say no, India is not reeling under economic crisis,” said Dr Amiya Sharma, Executive Director, Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Nidhi (RGVN), while delivering the Prof. Madhab Chandra Bora Memorial Oration (15th edition) organized by the Department of Business Administration, Tezpur University on Friday. He was delivering the lecture on the topic “Is there an Economic Crisis in India?”
Prof Madhab Chandra Bora was the founder Dean of the School of Management Sciences, Tezpur University and in memory of the professor, the university has been organizing various events during the last few years.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sharma said that India’s GDP growth forecast was 5 per cent and looking at the global scenario, this growth rate was reasonably good. He reminded every one of the Hindu rate of growth where India’s annual growth rate stagnated to around 3.5 per cent from the 1950s to 1980s.
“Our problem is that we are too obsessed with GDP growth rate and keep on comparing ourselves with China,” Dr. Sharma said. Commenting on the government’s delay in releasing the National Sample Survey Office’s (NSSO) job survey data that suggested that unemployment rate in India was highest in 45 years, Dr Sharma further said that such move of the government had led many, especially those abroad, questing India’s data credibility.
Earlier, remembering Prof Bora, Prof S S Sarkar, Head, Department of Commerce, gave a life sketch of the professor, whom he described as a man of diverse qualities, an efficient administrator and an exceptional orator.
