KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar District All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Wednesday came out to the streets of Kokrajhar Town demanding a comprehensive policy and action to crack down on the drug-supply network in Assam.
A rally was taken out in Kokrajhar under the aegis of Kokrajhar District AASU to register protest against the suppliers of drugs and alcoholic substances. The rally which started from Kokrajhar District AASU Office moved towards the office of the District Commissioner where students with banners in hands appealed to everyone to stop using alcoholic and drug substances.
Before the start of the rally, Ranjit Kr Basumatary, Project Manager of Salvation Foundation, Rehabilitation Centre, Titaguri, said that the patience level goes down, anxiety increases, and there are psychological effects when drug substances are used. He said that those addicted want to stay isolated, and keep distancing themselves from society while society fears them. He said that the society should extend support, motivate, and divert their habit to make their attention go away from drugs but not torture or physically assault them. The addicted youths have no idea about such substances’ impact while starting their use and the society also should keep an eye on them from the initial stage itself. Basumatary opined that wine, cigarettes, etc. should not be used in social ceremonies from where the youths start to learn the use of drugs and alcohol. He also said that the citizens had the responsibility of reforming society and should stop serving alcohol, cigarettes, and drug substances during social celebrations like weddings, birthdays, functions, picnics, pujas, rituals, etc.
Meanwhile, Vice-President of AASU Nabajyoti Ray said that the police simply apprehend the drug users and hawkers and they are released after sometime, which is not at all enough to counter the drug menace. He alleged that the police never intensified operations against drug suppliers and hawkers. He demanded that the state government should initiate a comprehensive policy and ensure complete crackdown on the supply-network and market of drugs.
