Tea labourers stage protest against encroachment of tea garden land, Joysagar

JOYSAGAR: Tension prevailed in Deopani Tea Estate (Amguri) of Sivasagar district on Wednesday after hundreds of tea garden laborers staged a protest against a private sector oil company of Sivasagar. As per information, the oil company has allegedly encroached 120 bighas of Deopani tea garden revenue land during the survey and exploration works of the company.

The Deopani garden laborers assembled in the Amguri-Halwating road near Deopani and blocked the busy road demanding action against the oil company. Finally, the Amguri SDO and the Amguri Executive Magistrate arrived and assured the laborers to discuss the matter with the higher authorities and to take action as per law.

Meanwhile, in Khongia Tea Estate of Sivasagar, another tea garden laborers’ unit staged a protest on Wednesday demanding repair of the Khangia-Athabari connecting road. Khangia Tea Estate Labour Union president Pradip Munda and secretary Dipu Tanti led the agitating laborers. Later, the Sivasagar PWD Assistant Engineer (Rural) and Sivasagar ADC M.Gogoi arrived at Khangia Tea Estate and held a discussion with the union. They assured to include the road in the Sivasagar district tea garden roads construction project.
