Tezpur: Tezpur celebrated World Snake Day by honoring Sourav Barkataki, who has rescued over 4,000 snakes in his 30-year conservation journey. Held at Baliram Lahkar Hall, the event acknowledged his efforts in building a 300-member rescue and awareness team.
Dr. Ripun Chutia of Biswanath Civil Hospital reported zero deaths among 462 snakebite cases in two years, thanks to improved awareness and prompt medical care. A special moment came when nurse Jyoti Chetri was recognized for breastfeeding a baby whose mother was hospitalized after a snakebite—an act that touched many.
Speakers highlighted the ecological importance of snakes and the medical value of their venom, urging people to avoid traditional healers and seek proper treatment. Several contributors, including Dr. Bhuyan, Dr. Singh, Officer Rahul Gogoi, and Chetri, were honored, while volunteers received Team Sourav Barkataki kits for their conservation efforts.
