JAMUGURIHAT: In a historic judgment, Additional District And Session Judge (fast track) AM Muhammad Mahiuddin in Tezpur court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to one Gitumoni Bezbaruah involved in the double murder case of the Tezpur-Patiachuburi area under Tezpur Kacharigaon police outpost here on November 20, 2020, while it released Ujjal Bezbaruah (Gitumoni’s elder brother) from the charges of his involvement in the gruesome killing due to the lack of sufficient evidence against him.

In the heinous incident, an American citizen Braiyan Arij (84 years) and his wife Asha Arij (65 years), an Indian-origin woman of Dehradun, were brutally killed by the duo, triggering sensation in the region. Braiyan, after getting Indian citizenship, had married Asha Arij, an inhabitant of Dehradun and due to service-related reasons, he was posted to Tezpur under Project Vartak of the Union Ministry of Defence. However, after his retirement, Braiyan with his family settled at the Patiachuburi area in Tezpur town.

As the aged couple lived in Patiachuburi area for over 30 years, bonhomie developed between the couple with people of the locality and as after the incident, the neighbours did not see the old couple for around 24 hours, they informed the police suspecting something unnatural.

Police subsequently rushed to the spot and discovered the bodies of the couple in two different rooms, in pools of blood. Investigation was expedited and later the police managed to apprehend the duo accused, who confessed that they murdered the couple in cold blood with the intention of robbery.

Meanwhile, the neighbours including Sonia Gill, closely attached to the unfortunate couple, and who had demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits, hailed the court for awarding life sentence to them, stating “We were optimistic that time and court would one day give adequate justice to us.”
