TEZPUR: In an effort to make Mathematics more engaging and accessible to young minds, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tezpur University (TU), in collaboration with the Assam Academy of Mathematics, launched a week-long workshop titled ‘7-Day Excursion in Mathematics 2025.’ The programme commenced on Thursday at the university campus, drawing participation from secondary school students across the Tezpur region.
Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, graced the inaugural session as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he remarked that Mathematics is not just about numbers or equations, but a tool that shapes the mind and develops logical thinking. He further elaborated on the practical relevance of Mathematics, citing its use in weather forecasting, artificial intelligence, sports analytics, and various other disciplines.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Bhim Prasad Sarmah, faculty coordinator of the programme, noted that the Assam Academy of Mathematics, established in 1986, had played a pivotal role in spreading mathematical awareness. He also highlighted the continued efforts of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tezpur University, in engaging with school-level learners through various outreach initiatives.
Dr Biren Das, Controller of Examinations, TU, urged students to look beyond the traditional image of the subject and appreciate its relevance in everyday life.
Prof Shuvam Sen, Head of the Department of Mathematics, stated that over the next seven days, the joint workshop will provide secondary students with hands-on learning experiences, fresh perspectives, and opportunities to interact with experts in the field.
During the inaugural event, Dr Ram Charan Deka, former Vice-Principal, Darrang College, and former President of the Assam Academy of Mathematics (Sonitpur branch), was also present. Around 60 students from different schools from class five to ten are participating in the workshop.
