TEZPUR: To reform Mass Communication programmes as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, Tezpur University organized a two-day National Workshop on a Learning Outcome-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) at the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism (MCJ). The University has been entrusted by the UGC with the crucial task of developing this curriculum. The LOCF committee is headed by Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University.

The workshop brought together a distinguished panel of academicians and industry veterans, including Prof KG Suresh, Prof Niranjana Vanalli, Prof Sisir K Basu, Prof Biswajit Das, and Prof Sanjeev Bhanawat, among others.

Aligning LOCF with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, these esteemed experts collaboratively analyzed and tried to formulate a model curriculum for media education within the framework of NEP 2020. By prioritizing measurable and competency-driven outcomes, LOCF fosters a learner-centred, skill-oriented educational environment that resonates with NEP’s overarching goals.

PJ Baruah, Executive Editor, Assam Tribune, stressed the crucial need to incorporate industry-relevant skills into the curricula to make students industry-ready. The forum meticulously deliberated on the optimal programme structures for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in media communication, ensuring a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

As per the mandate of the UGC, the initial focus will be on identifying and addressing shortcomings in existing syllabi for various subjects, proposing solutions for rectifying or replacing outdated content, informed Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Chairperson of the committee. The new curriculum will be meticulously reviewed to ensure the seamless incorporation and integration of Indian Knowledge Systems. The entire workshop was coordinated by the Department of MCJ, headed by Prof Abhijit Bora, and his team at the university.
