Union Cabinet approves construction of more railway lines between Aluabari Road & New Jalpaiguri

This project will ease congestion and enhance connectivity of a crucial corridor that serves as a gateway to the Northeast.

Guwahati: In the announced project by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Railways of India, 3rd and 4th railway lines between Aluabari Road and New Jalpaiguri will be built and will span a length of 57 kilometres under the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹1,786 crore. It is part of the Delhi–Guwahati corridor and is designed to enhance the efficiency of both passenger and freight transport, and also play a crucial role in facilitating the movement of key commodities such as tea, timber, and agricultural produce. 

It will involve infrastructure development across seven stations, 99 bridges, three Road Over Bridges (ROBs), and eight Road Under Bridges (RUBs), and facilitate the movement of an additional 21.6 million tonnes of cargo annually, resulting in an estimated savings of ₹2,551 crore in logistics costs and conserving 2.14 crore litres of diesel each year.

This project will further expand the local economy, boost connectivity across the Northeast, Bihar, West Bengal and Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal borders and further increase the quality of life of people in the Northeast, boost economic growth and promote regional integration.
