KHERONI: In a devastating incident, dozens of wild elephants wreaked havoc in Mailoo area under Southern Forest Range Office, West Karbi Anglong district, destroying five houses belonging to two families. The affected families are from Jiribasa and Belbari villages.
Rajkumar Ram, a resident of Jiribasa village, lost two houses, including a concrete house and a kitchen. The elephants destroyed rice, pulses, clothes, and household utensils in his home. Similarly, Joyram Kumhar from Belbari village had three houses demolished, along with 40-50 (approximately 1.5-2 tons) of paddy, jaggery, rice, pulses, clothes, drums and utensils.
Both families narrowly escaped in the darkness to save their lives. Such incidents of wild elephant destruction are not new to the area. Local residents have raised concerns over the forest department’s alleged inaction in addressing the recurring issue.
