World Environment Day celebrated in Assam

SIVASAGAR: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell and NCC (11 Assam Girls (I) Coy and Naval Unit) of Gargaon College, in collaboration with Assam Science Society, Gargaon Branch, celebrated World Environment Day on Sunday with the theme of 'Only One Earth' with a day-long programme.

The programme was organized in the presence of the Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Dr Chinmoy Sarma, Principal of Rajiv Gandhi Petroleum Institute, Sivasagar and Diganta Bora, Associate Professor Department of Chemistry, Sibsagar College and the entire college fraternity for creating environmental awareness. An inter-departmental competition on innovations for reusing plastic bottles was organized wherein a total of 185 students participated in the competition. Altogether there were 42 teams from the college. The competition was inaugurated by the noted columnist and Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his inaugural speech, Dr Mahanta spoke on the ill effects of plastic on the environment and stressed creating awareness for the same to safeguard environment.

The NSS unit of the Gargaon College and Eco Club in collaboration with Khelua High School, Dorika Hari Para Ghat MV School and Hahchara Lebang Gaon LP School celebrated World Environment Day at Gargaon College premises and Hahchara Lebang Gaon Rangamancha with plantation drive, district level quiz competition, speech competition and poem competition. To mark the day, more than 50 plants were planted by the NSS volunteers under the supervision of Dr Rimjim Borah, the NSS programme Officer of Gargaon College.

In continuation of the programme, a popular talk was also organized by Assam Science Society, Gargaon College on the topic 'Effects of Plastic in Our Daily Life'. Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College inaugurated the programme. Dr Mahanta spoke about the role of United Nations for conservation of environment, sustainable development and urged everyone to be a part of it. Diganta Bora, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Sibsagar College, was invited as resource person for the popular talk. Diganta Bora in his deliberation, highlighted the journey of plastic on earth and its negative effects and also suggested ways to overcome it.

Meanwhile, saplings were planted on the premises of various offices for environment protection on the occasion of World Environment Day in Nazira subdivision of Sivasagar district on Sunday. In line with the World Environment Day, a cleanliness drive was carried out on the banks of Barbarua Pond in a joint effort of Nazira subdivision administration and Nazira Municipality Board. Officials and several social workers of Nazira Slub-Division participated in the plantation drive and planted one sapling each.

A subdivision level painting competition on the subject 'Seuji Dharani Dhuniya' was organized among the students of Class I to Class III (A) and class IV to VI ( B) at Nazira College. The competition was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner and In-charge Nazira subdivision, Sabyasachi Kashyap.

The students who won the painting competitions were awarded with a certificate, book and sapling at an open meeting held on the premises of the office of Nazira Subdivisional Officer. In addition, Nazira Municipality Board chairperson Bornali Chetia unveiled a symbolic 'I LOVE NAZIRA' on the banks of Barbarua Pond in front of the Nazira SDO Office.

The event was attended by Sabyasachi Kashyap, In-charge, Nazira subdivision, Nazira Circle Officer Vanlal Limpuia Nampui, Simaluguri Municipality Board Chairperson Kabita Mech, Banbandhu Niron Gogoi and academicians Rajen Sharma and Deokon Changmai.

TINSUKIA: The World Environment Day has been observed by different organizations and institutions across Tinsukia district with plantation drive, awareness programme etc. The Aryabhatta Science Centre of Itakhuli block, in association with Mahakali Grant High School and nearby tea gardens and villages, organized an environment awareness camp which was addressed by AATSA leader Raju Kurmi, Swapna Deka Malakar, headmistress, and Dipti Moyee Choudhury, assistant headmistress of the school. Later, more than 300 saplings of fruit trees, medicinal plants were planted within the school premises. The Barekuri Parivesh Unnayan Samity and eco-club of Borgaon ME School observed the day under the aegis of Tinsukia Zilla Parishad with rally, awareness programme etc. aiming to motivate school children towards conservation of hoolock gibbon.

Ledu College organized a two-day programme on June 4 and June 5. While on Saturday, it held the annual Prof Rubi Sonowal Memorial lecture in sync with the celebration of the college's silver jubilee, on Sunday the college observed World Environment Day in association with NSS & NCC unit and carried out plantation programme within the college premises.

HAFLONG: With the theme 'Only one earth', World Environment Day was observed throughout the district of Dima Hasao on Sunday. At Haflong, Dima Hasao Forest Department organized a ceremonial plantation programme at N L Daolagupu sports complex in the presence of EM, Nojit Kemprai, Principal Secretary Mukut Kemprai, Secretary, Debanan Daolagupu, CCF, M Tungnun, DFO Tuhin Langthasa, Professor Sarbojit Thaosen of Haflong Government College, students, and officers and staff from various departments. Free saplings were distributed among the people.

BISWANATH CHARIALI: World Environment Day was observed in the newly-established Pertabgarh Tea Estate Model School, Biswanath Chariali with a day-long programme on Sunday. The day's programme commenced with a plantation drive inaugurated by Debajyoti Baruah, Deputy Manager, Pertapghur Tea Estate and president, SMDC of the school. In his inaugural address, Baruah called upon the students to plant trees and also to follow other environment related norms to make the earth a better living place. Following this, a drawing competition was held among the students of the local schools in which a good number of students participated.

A meeting was also held on the occasion with Hiranya Borthakur, Principal-in-charge in the chair. Taking part as the distinguished speaker, Shanker Tossa, Assistant Teacher, Pertabgarh Adarsha ME School, dwelt at length about the significance of the day.

BARPETA: Along with the rest of the world, in Barpeta also World Environment Day was observed in different places of the district. In a programme which was held by the police department of Barpeta led by the Superintentdent of Police Amitabh Sinha, a tree plantation drive was conducted in various places. In this programme, the Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, Tej Prasad Bhusal and Ashok Kumar Das, Secretary, Barpeta Press Club also took part. In another programme held at Barpeta Vidyapith HS School by the forest division, Barpeta, education department, Barpeta and District Information and Public Relation department, Barpeta, a discussion meeting was held on the topic 'Global Warming and our Future'.

KALAIGAON: Along with rest of the world and country, World Environment Day was observed on Sunday all across the State enthusiastically with the aim of encouraging awareness and action for saving environment from degradation. World Environment Day was celebrated by the Assam Rural Pharmacy Association of Kalaigaon. On the occasion, the members of the organization planted saplings in the campus of Kalaigaon Pragatishil Janamancha. The plantation was formally inaugurated by Kaberi Rong Pi Pi, Circle Officer of Kalaigaon revenue circle and she was accompanied by social workers like Bakul Sarkar, Tarun Azad Deka and other dignitaries.

MORIGAON: World Environment Day was celebrated by Nehru Yuba Kendra, Morigaon and Jeeban Jeuti Krishak Sangha, supported by the Environment Conservation Forum, at Ulubari LP school, Baghara in Morigaon district on Sunday.

Nehru Yuba Kendra, Morigaon, Jeeban Jeuti Krishak Sangha supported by the Environment Conservation Forum , AWW and students of the school celebrated the day with funfare at the school campus. The day began with a cleanliness drive which was conducted by the students, AWW and members of the three organizations. Thereafter, an art competition was held among the students of the school. A meeting was organized by Jeeban Jeuti Krishak Sangha.The president of JJKS, Tulsi Deka presided over the meeting.

MANGALDAI: Greenery and 'C' vitamin rich fruit may help cancer patients to ease off their pain a little bit. Believing in it, voluntary organization 'Crystal Vision', synchronizing with the World Environment Day, planted saplings here in the campus of the newly-built Darrang Cancer Centre (DCC).

Prominent persons, namely Nirmali Devi Sharma, chairperson, Mangaldai Municipal Board ( MMB), Dr Harpal Sing Suri, Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang, Dr Nirmal Kumar Beria, Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer, Darrang, Dr Saidul Islam, Dentist, DCC, and other digniatries took part.

The celebration also featured speech by Mayukh Goswami, president of Crystal Vision on the theme 'Only One Earth'. In the beginning, the guests were greeted each with a Neem sapling and a gamosa. This was followed by an anti-tobacco campaign as part of the 'World No Tobacco Day' celebration under the aegis of the District Tobacco Control Cell ( DTCC). Participating the campaign as resource persons, Nodal Officer of DTCC, Darrang, Dr N K Beria and senior dental consultant of DCC, Dr S Islam explained how our environment has to take a serious burden due to the use of tobacco in the world and urged people to stop tobacco use.
