HAFLONG: Educated youths of Retzawl village, located only 16 km from Haflong, the district headquarters of Dima Hasao, have opted for poultry farming and gardening as their source of livelihood.

Many opine that the name of the village 'Retzawl' literally means 'rubber plants'. It was established about 250 years back but lags behind in development. The alleged indifferent attitude of the authority concerned towards solving the problems of the villagers, especially the problem of unemployment, compelled the youths of the village to become self-employed by taking up gardening and farming.

To encourage the youths in farming, the gaon bura of the village, Tuolor started a poultry farm with local hens and ducks in the backyard of his residence. The youths have also engaged themselves in daily wage jobs instead of wasting time in seeking government jobs.

Tuolor said, "People should not sit at home waiting for government jobs. They should take up scientific methods of farming to become self-employed."
