IMPHAL: Three individuals died, and four others were injured in independent road accidents in three districts of Manipur during the five-day Yaoshang festival, which ends on Tuesday, officials reported.
In a tragic accident, an auto-rickshaw driver from Litan Sareikhong village in Ukhrul district was killed on the spot when his vehicle skidded out of control and fell into a culvert at Tamnoupokpi village under Kangpokpi police station.
The accident took place around 12:45 PM on Monday. Three passengers in the vehicle were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police sources said.
Another deadly accident occurred at Elangkhangpokpi in Kakching district when two cars crashed head-on on the state highway. The accident, which occurred around 4 PM on the third day of the festival, killed one person while the victim was being taken to Kakching Hospital. Another person was injured in the accident and is undergoing treatment.
At the same time, on the inaugural day of the festival, a two-wheeler driver was killed in a road accident near the Japanese Memorial Peace Park at Maibam Lokpa Hillocks in Bishnupur district. The incident took place at about 10 PM on the state highway falling under the Nambol police station jurisdiction.
The Yaoshang festival that started on March 14 is a significant cultural and religious celebration in Manipur, characterized by different festivities and sporting events. The festival will end on Tuesday.
