Manipur: Caretaker arrested for stealing money from chest box of Mahadeva mandir

Guwahati: The district police of Imphal East on Sunday arrested a 'garot' (caretaker) for allegedly stealing money from a chest box in the campus of Govindajee mandir's Palace Compound.

Ningthoujam Dipak Singh, 30, of Khaidem Awang Leikai, Imphal West was staying at Govindajee temple complex when he was accused of stealing from the temple.

He had been working as 'garot' in the temple for the last 10 years.

A complaint was lodged by section officer of Shree Shree Govindajee Temple Board, M. Barish Sharma on Sunday. He complained that a sum of money from the chest box of Mahadeva mandir located inside the campus of Govindajee temple has been stolen during midnight on Saturday.

A case has been registered at Porompat police station under FIR number 152(8)2020 PRT-PS U/S IPC 380/34 a team of police arrested the culprit on Sunday from the campus of the temple itself.

The police team said the knife that was used by the Dipak has been recovered. The accused was also tested for the dreaded coronavirus and was found to be negative.
