Manipur CM Announces Destruction of 90 Acres of Illegal Poppy Cultivation in Ukhrul

The operation was executed on Thursday, targeting unauthorized poppy cultivation in the hilly terrain of the region.

UKHRUL: N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, announced that security forces and forest department personnel conducted a successful operation to eliminate poppy cultivation across 90 acres in the Ukhrul district. The operation was executed on Thursday, targeting unauthorized poppy cultivation in the hilly terrain of the region.

"In another successful mission under the War on Drugs campaign, combined forces of Ukhrul district police, 6th Manipur Rifles (MR), 18th Assam Rifles, and the Forest Department successfully destroyed 90 acres of poppy plantation in the Phalee hill range under the jurisdiction of Lungchong Maiphei (LM) Police Station in Ukhrul district," the CM said in a post on X.

As part of the operation, 12 huts associated with the illegal activities were also set ablaze. "An FIR has been registered for further investigation. I applaud the combined forces for the swift and coordinated measures," Singh added.

In another similar incident, authorities in Manipur destroyed four acres of illicit poppy crops in the Churachandpur district, near the Myanmar border, ahead of the harvesting season. The operation took place on Wednesday in the Haopi Mollen hill range under the supervision of an executive magistrate.

A joint team comprising the Manipur Police, 37 Assam Rifles, the Forest Department, and the Executive Magistrate carried out the destruction based on intelligence inputs.
