Imphal: Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Congress MP from the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, has sharply denounced Delhi Police's alleged unlawful imprisonment of two notable Manipur women leaders on Thursday, including Thokchom Sujata, the convenor of Imagi Meira, and two others. While in the city to attend a Nupi Lan (Women’s War) commemoration event hosted by a Manipuri organisation located in Delhi, the women leaders were reportedly detained at a residence in New Delhi.
Dr. Bimol Akoijam denounced the incarceration on social media site X, calling it a "house arrest" and calling it a violation of the women's rights. The Nupi Lan ceremony honours the historic resistance of Manipuri women against feudal and colonial forces in 1939, he noted, underscoring the incident's irony.
Condemn the illegal detention (house arrest) of well-known women activists from Manipur who came to participate in the commemoration of Nupi Lan in Delhi. It’s against the very purpose of celebrating the indomitable spirit of women signified by the resistance put up by the women in Manipur against the injustices perpetrated by the feudal and colonial forces in 1939,” the MP wrote.
Every year, Manipuri women who battled against socio-political injustices during British colonial authority are honoured with the Nupi Lan memorial event. The government' stance on women's rights and democratic freedoms has come under scrutiny after the women leaders were detained.
As of right moment, the Delhi Police and other authorities have not issued a statement regarding the incident. In the meantime, a number of activists and civil society organisations have echoed the MP's call for the jailed women leaders to be released immediately.
