Manipur: CoTU Extends Shutdown in Protest Against CAPF Deployment in Saibol Bungpi

The shutdown has been extended from 2 AM on January 4, 2025, to 2 AM on January 5, 2025.

SAIBOL BUNGPI: In a fresh statement, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has announced an extension of the total shutdown for another 24 hours, escalating its protest against the continued deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the Saibol Bungpi region under Lhungtin Sub-Division. The shutdown has been extended from 2 AM on January 4, 2025, to 2 AM on January 5, 2025.

The CoTU, in a statement, said, "The Committee on Tribal Unity is perturbed at the action of the Superintendent of Police towards the Kangpokpi public protestors, who have high hopes and expectations from him for the removal of all CAPF deployed from the valley into the fringe areas at the Saibol Bungpi region of the Sadar Hills Lhungtin Sub-Division, which has remained unresolved till date."

"Therefore, the Committee on Tribal Unity is constrained to extend another 24 hours of total shutdown w.e.f. 2 am of 4th January till 2 am of 5th January 2025 until all CAPF deployed from Imphal Valley is removed from Saibol, which is located within Sadar Hills Kangpokpi for dispensation of fair and just policing within the said area," it said.

CoTU reiterated its condemnation of the brutal assault on peaceful protestors on the evening of January 3, which left 15 individuals injured, 11 of whom had to be referred for advanced medical care.
