Imphal: In a recent development in the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, the state government has been accused by the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra of orchestrating and aggravating the crisis in his address to the reporters at Congress Bhavan, Imphal.
According to Meghachandra, the state government deliberately initiated actions that intensified the growing unrest between the two communities which had started on May 3, 2023.
Meghachandra claimed that the evidence supporting his assertions was financial irregularities, including payments to Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups.
The Home Department of the Manipur government paid the members of the Hmar People's Democratic Convention (HPDC) a total of Rs. 6.27 crores on July 9, 2024, he added. Using cheque number 226200, the payment was credited to an HDFC account owned by HPDC members Lalneikung and Joshua.
The Congress President pointed out that such revelations did not align with the state's government's earlier resolve to withdraw from the SoO agreement it made with Zo-Kuki armed groups. In addition, the Union Government was urged to abrogate the SoO pact by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on February 9, 2024. Despite this, the transaction had taken place.
Adding to the discovery, Meghachandra claimed that further investigations were done after the Leader of the House denied any such payment being made. It was then revealed that the Assambly was misled by the Chief Minister of Manipur.
