IMPHAL: Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who assumed office as the 17th Governor of Manipur on Friday, conducted a comprehensive review of the state’s law and order situation on Saturday. Chairing a high-level security meeting at Raj Bhavan in Imphal, the Governor examined the prevailing security measures, with special attention to the sensitive border regions, according to a communiqué issued by the Raj Bhavan.

The Governor directed state Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh to prioritize the safety of citizens and urged Army and paramilitary personnel to collaborate fully with the state administration to maintain peace.

Attendees of the meeting included Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Home Commissioner N Ashok Kumar, IGAR (South) Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, GOC 57 Mountain Division Maj Gen SS Kartikeya, and senior officials from the CRPF and BSF.

Bhalla, a retired IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre and former Union Home Secretary, took charge amid ongoing ethnic violence that has claimed over 250 lives and displaced more than 60,000 people since May 2023. On his first day in office, he also met Lt Gen Abhijit Pendharkar, GOC of 3 Corps, and other military officials, who briefed him on current security deployments.

Meanwhile, fresh unrest erupted in Kangpokpi district, where protestors under the Committee on Tribal Unity attacked the SP’s office with stones and petrol bombs, injuring SP Manoj Prabhakar and damaging police vehicles. The violence followed the deployment of Central forces to Uyok Ching village after a December operation flushed out alleged militants.

In response, Kangpokpi District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari directed sub-divisional magistrates to remain at their headquarters and ensure the safety of residents. Manipur police reported that the situation was under control and closely monitored.
