IMPHAL: In a major operation, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, in coordination with Manipur Police and local authorities, successfully arranged the surrender of 99 weapons in different districts of Manipur between February 27 and March 1. This is part of the ongoing efforts to improve security and usher in peace in the region.
In the Tamenglong district, constant negotiations by the security forces resulted in the surrender of 17 improvised single-barrel rifles, nine homemade mortars, grenades, and other weapons supplies. In Kangpokpi district, meanwhile, the Assam Rifles facilitated the surrender of seven pump-action rifles and 15 improvised mortars. Similar operations in Imphal East resulted in the surrender of five bolt-action rifles, one lathode gun, and 11 improvised mortars.
On February 27, additional operations in the hill areas yielded 10 weapons, including a 7.62 mm Self Loading Rifle and two pistols. The next day, 14 more arms were handed in at Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts, including a sniper rifle and several improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The Indian Army also interacted with local stakeholders in Moirangpurel and Itham, and helped surrender a number of weapons. Intelligence-based operations in Tengnoupal district resulted in the recovery of six more weapons, including pistols and IEDs. All the recovered weapons and ammunition have been transferred to the Manipur Police for further action.
