IMPHAL: In a major crackdown on extortion, Manipur Police arrested seven militants belonging to different insurgent groups on Thursday. The arrests were made in independent operations in Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal districts, reflecting the efforts of the authorities to counter militant activities in the area.
The initial operation was conducted in Imphal West, where four active members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) were apprehended at their camp in Kameng Sabal. The individuals who were identified as Takhelmayum Victor (23), Huidrom Vikash Singh alias Sanamacha (25), Oinam Naocha alias Max (19), and Awungshi John (33) were accused of collecting money through extortion from the public, local establishments, and government officials. Police seized three .32 pistols, two 9mm pistols, and 113 donation cards during the operation.
In a separate incident, Moirangthem Gobin alias Khaba Meitei (38), an active cadre of KCP (City Meitei), was arrested in the Erumpal area of Kakching district for extorting money from residents. Moreover, Pebam Dhakeshor Singh (51), belonging to the PREPAK (PRO) group, was taken into custody in Singjamei Okram Leikai, where he was allegedly collecting money through a mobile phone given by an accomplice. Officials seized a mobile phone, a wallet, an Aadhaar card, and a voter ID from Singh.
Police officials have pledged once again to eliminate extortion and militant activities. Further investigations are ongoing.
