CHURACHANDPUR: A protest took place in Churachandpur district on Tuesday in response to the government's decision to end the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR) and build a fence along the border. The United Zou Organisation (UZO) led the demonstration, which began at 11:30 AM at the 'Wall of Remembrance.'
Participants, holding banners and placards, expressed their frustration with the government’s move. For many in the community, the Free Movement Regime has allowed easy cross-border travel and trade, and they fear that scrapping it and building a border fence will disrupt their way of life.
The protest reflected concerns about how the changes would impact the livelihoods of those who depend on these cross-border connections.
One protester declared, "No border fencing can sever our cultural ties."
The demonstration was attended by Saikot MLA Paolienlal Haokip, Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip, Singngat MLA Chinlunthang, and leaders from various Kuki-Zo tribes.
