IMPHAL: In a breakthrough, a combined team of state police and central para-military officers broke up two illegal checkpost-cum-camps on National Highway 2 (NH-2) in Manipur's Churachandpur district.

The action, taken on Saturday, was to restore unfettered movement along the highway and maintain law and order in the area. Official sources had confirmed the operation on Sunday.

The security personnel attacked illegal checkpoints at Kaprang and S. Kwatlian, areas that had been occupied by miscreants since the eruption of ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities on May 3, 2023.

The clashes resulted in the death of more than 260 people and severely disrupted the region. The destruction of these camps is an important milestone toward stabilizing the situation and restoring normalcy to the district.

Based on the reports, the presence of these camps was no longer needed since the security situation within the area had considerably improved. Removing these illegal posts, the authorities reiterated their intent to keep traffic moving freely and peacefully on NH-2.

"Security Forces have occupied these areas, and unrestricted movement of ordinary vehicles is being facilitated. Law enforcement authorities are also committed to ensuring order and security on our highways," the report added. Interestingly enough, the operation was carried out without any arrests or seizure of weapons.

Though no one has been arrested, the demolition of these illegal establishments will help with further de-escalation of tensions in the area.
