IMPHAL: In a shocking and unfortunate incident, a fourth-semester BSc Nursing student was found dead hanging in an abandoned hostel within the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) campus on Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Abiel Sachiana (21) d/o Dicky N Sangma of Rengram, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

According to a police report, Sachiana was found hanging around 8:30 am on Wednesday, inside the old nursing hostel building, which has remained unused since it was severely damaged by a fire in 2017. A team of mobile forensic experts, along with the executive magistrate, arrived at the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation after receiving the information.

Lamphel police have registered an Unnatural Death (UD) case, and the body has been sent to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue for postmortem examination. Meanwhile, the RIMS authority has expressed deepest condolences over the tragic demise of nursing student Abiel Sachiana Ch Marak.

Abiel had been residing in Room No. 4 of the RIMS Nursing Hostel, which houses around 180 rooms. How she gained access to the sealed-off, disused structure remains unclear and is now a key focus of the ongoing investigation. However, a case has been registered at Lamphel PS under UD Case No. 8/LPS/2025, and the matter is under investigation.
