IMPHAL: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will travel to Manipur on June 29 and 30, according to KC Venugopal, the party's general secretary. During his tour, Gandhi will visit the relief camps established in the state and speak with civil society groups in Churachandpur and Imphal, stated Venugopal.

Since May 3, when violence between the Meitei and Kuki groups started as a result of a protest march by the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM), Manipur has been in a state of upheaval. Since then, at than 100 people have died as a result of the violence in the hill-state.

Taking on twitter, K C Venugopal wrote, “Sh. @RahulGandhi ji will be visiting Manipur on 29-30 June. He will visit relief camps and interact with civil society representatives in Imphal and Churachandpur during his visit.

Manipur has been burning for nearly two months, and desperately needs a healing touch so that the society can move from conflict to peace. This is a humanitarian tragedy and it is our responsibility to be a force of love, not hate.”

The Assam Rifles have evacuated over 50,000 displaced people from the violent Manipur to date, giving them safe passage, shelter, food, and medicine, according to a statement from the paramilitary group.

According to the statement, the Assam Rifles (AR) was the first to arrive to help the residents of Manipur after being requisitioned. The force, which operated impartially, rendered selfless service by saving and removing members of all communities from the area of conflict.

Approximately 9000 trucks have travelled on NH-37 incident-free since the convoy began on May 14 thanks in part to the Assam Rifles' initiative to lead round-the-clock protection of the convoy of civil trucks transporting supplies, medicines, and oil to Imphal Valley.
