SHILLONG: General secretary of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intends to make India a ‘one language, one religion’ state.

The statement of the Congress leader came after BJP national president Amit Shah reinstated that the party will bring back the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 if the party comes back in power at the Centre after the Lok Sabha polls.

“We know that the BJP wants to turn India into a country with one language and one religion. However, they were unable to pass the CAB in the Rajya Sabha because of strong opposition from the people of North East, hence they had to put the CAB in their list of agenda if re-elected to power,” he said.

He said everything depends on the public and his (Amit Shah) statement will become a topic of discussion ahead of the Lok Sabha election.

“As of right now the CAB has lapsed and the future of this bill depends on the new government which comes to power in Delhi,” Shiangpliang said.
