SHILLONG: Meghalaya Congress has taken up women empowerment as a key agenda for their election campaigns for the upcoming assembly elections. Keeping up with that target, the party released a set of Five Commitments on Thursday as a part of their election manifesto.
The Congress party promised to make Meghalaya a 5-star state if they are elected to power in the upcoming assembly elections and they have selected five commitments for reaching that goal. The announcement came from the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress head Vincent Pala and AICC General Secretary in-charge for Meghalaya, Manish Chatrath.
The 1st commitment is the direct transfer of Rs 3000 every month to the single mothers of the state who qualify for the Below Poverty Line category. Translating to Rs 36000 per year, this amount will help in meeting the financial requirements as well as the educational needs of the children.
The 2nd commitment is to free Meghalaya from the grips of the severe unemployment problem, which leads to the migration of the youth of the state to other regions of the country. This will be achieved by providing a job to a deserving member of each household in the state.
The 3rd commitment of the party is to make the state completely corruption free. And to achieve this goal, the party has promised to pass a new law about transparency in government activities. All documents related to developmental activities undertaken by the government will be uploaded on the public domain as mentioned by the party leaders.
The 4th promise deals with the power situation in the state. Once elected to power, the congress party aims to create new power projects as well as to streamline the supplies in order to achieve the goal of zero power cuts across the state.
The 5th and last commitment aims to deal with the raging problem of substance abuse in the state. Apart from pulling the plug on all the supply routes and formats of narcotic substances, engagement of the youth of the state in developmental activities will ensure the making of a drug-free Meghalaya.
With about two weeks left for elections, it remains to see what the ruling National People's Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) offer to counter these offers in the state.
